This book had no reviews when I bought it so I was going in blind. I decided to give it a try largely due to the author's credentials and figured I would return it if it was not what I wanted on first glance. I do not know the author and have no affiliation with the author.I have only skimmed the book but I am very impressed at first glance. Donskov really digs into the science behind hockey training. For example he explains how power = work / time and why that is important, and the chemical equation for adenosine triphosphate and how ATP is the energy your body runs off of. It reminds me of what I learned in my college physiology and nutrition classes. So, what I'm saying is you can get some really advanced education by reading this book. There are pictures, charts, and sample work outs. You will not be disappointed if you are a visual learner. There are many footnotes and citations, so you know everything is research-based.My only complaint is that there is not an index at the end of the book. It still deserves five stars.I intend to supplement this review when I really dig into the book.
I first had the opportunity to work with Anthony and his staff at DSC during the summer of 2016. During my internship, I was able to see why Anthony is regarded as one of the premier hockey strength and conditioning coaches in the country. His athlete-centered coaching style, coupled with his thirst for knowledge has changed my outlook on the coaching field for the better. With that said, I knew exactly what I was getting into in buying this book. This book is not a grab for cash or a claim at notoriety. This book is merely a reflection of how Anthony contributes to the success of hockey players at all levels of competition. Not only does Anthony present the "what," but he also supports his claims with the "why." Simply put, you will not find an aspect of this book that was included on a whim. While tailored to the hockey population, this book serves as a good resource for all coaches and trainers, regardless of sport or target population. The content, organization, and visual aids makes this book a must have for strength coaches everywhere. Kudos to Anthony on a job well done!
Not only for hockey s&c coaches, but coaches from all sports. You will gain a much better understanding of training principals and how to use these principals with your athletes. The information is clear, science AND experienced backed, and it is presented in a way that easy to understand. There are sample programs/templates, but these are not one size fits all programs. By using the principals and information outlined in this book, you will have a clear understanding of how to program throughout different phases of the year and you will know exactly why you are programming this way. I'm excited to apply different aspects of the book with my athletes this coming year and I can confidently say I highly recommend this book for all strength and conditioning coaches who looking to make a positive difference for their athletes and build some monsters
This book is an outstanding resource for any strength and conditioning coach looking to understand principles and how to implement them into the physical development of hockey athletes. Anthony has gone through all the research and scoured through so many resources to find out how to best physically prepare his athletes. The best part of the book is that is clear, concise and well though out. There is a reason for everything Anthony does and you can not help but respect that. Anthony is a passionate coach that wants to do the best for his athletes and if you want to do the best for your athletes, you should pick this up. You can choose to agree or disagree with his methods but you would be doing your athletes a disservice to not look at things from all angles.
This is a very good book for a strength and conditioning coach at any level working with hockey players. As a strength coach at the D1 level, I 've found numerous things throughout the book that I will take and implement in some fashion this year. I would absolutely recommend this book to up and coming hockey strength coaches as a resource to learn the basics of the sport from a physiological and training standpoint, but also to youth and high school hockey coaches as well. Anthony gives a very in detailed description of how to train athletes at all stages of development, and stresses the importance of play and multiple sports at a young age to develop better hockey players down the road. He then transitions to the importance of specialized training once athletes reach a certain age to get them reaching their full potential at the proper time in their career. He also includes so many sections that will be useful to advanced coaches such as the importance of regulating stress in and out of season within the sport and/or training. I will be recommending this book to any fellow coaches who are involved with the sport of ice hockey.
