I have a fair collection of maritime war and air disaster books, and this is one of the best. The text starts with the typical intro of the characters and circumstances, but quickly reels you in with the intrigues of the main character and related events. The disaster itself is similar to other sea disasters, but still just as exciting.The rest of the book is even more fascinating. It might sound cliched, but the events surrounding Rogers life after 'Morro Castle' over the next few decades really make him a person that seems right out of a film or novel in his psychopathology.IMHO, I think this is the best and most updated book on the Morro Castle.
I have to admit that I hadn't even heard of the Morro Castle, much less its story, before this book, so I can't begin to do the book comparisons so ably offered in other reviews. I can, however, say that I stayed up entirely too late 2 nights running because I was so riveted to the CD book. This is the reason I avoid "suspense" books, but I'm very glad to have finally heard the story. Apparently the print book has 8 pages of pictures, which I wish had been included with the CDs, but Dick Hill was, in my opinion, the ideal choice of reader for this book. Bravo!!
I'll be looking for more books from this author. I give him a 5 outta 5. Recommended.
After hearing Gordon Lightfoot's song written and sung about the sinking of the Morro Castle I had to read a book concerning the circumstances and the sinking. I have read four books on the Morro Castle now-and this is the best.
I own (as of 2013) all the books written on the Morro Castle and this is by far the best written account I've read. I would regard it as the definitive book on the subject except for one detail, already mentioned by the reviewer "A Slight Delay" in his excellent and most insightful review. There are other possible and credible (if less sensational) reasons for the Morro Castle disaster besides arson by Radio man George Rogers and there is no exploration or investigation of them in this book. Still, after all the books published, this one remains the best written account , so add your own addendum to it and check out (you can Google it) the article by William McFee on the Morro Castle Tragedy for a likely alternative theory. Also, may I suggest Brian Hicks "Ghost Ship" for clearing up the mystery of the Mary Celeste, The Hole by Drew Wilson for demolishing the "official" report on the sinking of the MS Estonia and Hugh E Bishop's The Night The Fitz Went Down for suggesting an intriguing and plausible, if somewhat unpopular, theory on the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
This is a well researched book, and an enjoyable read. I have read other books on this disaster, and this one seems to present a more documented analysis of the events.

A great read. As a kid my father took me to Asbury Park and we were shocked to see the Morro Castle helpless near the beach. It was blackened from the fire and some smoke still rose. The book does a great job in telling all.
