This book is much more than I expected. It's full of history, pictures, maps, GPS coordinates, descriptions. I've designed a loop route through Utah for a motorcycle camping trip this coming June. Very comprehensive book. I can't say enough about it. So glad I found it!
It was pretty good. I enjoyed the preface with the history, and in the areas it covered it was in depth. I gave it four stars because there were a lot of gaps considering it was touted as a guide for cor the entire state. I enjoy backcountry trails and there were a lot that weren't in the book.
Backcountry Adventures are the best guides of their kind out there. Odometer references, descriptive text, and (especially) GPS coordinates make these easy and foolproof to use. The map and index for the respective areas, Southeast, Central, etc., make planning your route easy as the different routes are color coded with their page numbers referenced. Good sampling of human interest content also, giving some history, flora and fauna, and geology information.My only criticism is that these guides should be spiral bound, and pages removable. This would allow the book to lie flat and pages and/or sections could be removed to make it more concise for use on a motorcycle or bicycle. These guides are the size of a mid sized phone book and are too big and heavy for anything but automotive use.

These books are a very useful resource. We off-road explore a lot and consider these a requirement. Even though they are older now - and you should get current maps and info before heading out on your own - the information in these books is extremely valuable.
I have found this title to be very interesting, and very informative at the same time. It provides a great deal of background information and historical facts for each of the trails it details. The book also provides some historical and other information on the state of Utah, including info on the types of wildlife and plantlife that can be found in the different climate of Utah.It includes many trails, all over the state. As the title suggests, mosts of the trails are ones that give you an alternate route, or backcountry route, to or through a city/town. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that I would like to see some more maps of the smaller, shorter off road trails in Utah.Overall, this is an excellent resource to have, and I have found it very enjoyable. There are great trails and wonderful details in the book. I would say it is worth the buy.
Not the fault of the item, but one must be careful when selecting a resource like this as to the publishing date. This was published in 2002. Conditions and even the locations of the trails themselves change too quickly for this guide to be reliable. We had some bad experiences after planning our adventures using this guide trusting the information to be accurate. Once a resource has proven unreliable it's value is greatly diminished.
There are serious errors in this book which can be frustrating and DANGEROUS! In April 2009 we used the book to explore Central Region trails #10 and #11. Both give the incorrect starting point from Interstate I-70. This required pulling off the highway and hiking looking for the trails.The book lists the starting point for trail #10 as just after Mile Marker 145 west bound.The CORRECT MILE MARKER IS 147 west bound!The book lists the starting point for trail #11 as Mile marker 144 east bound. We doubt this as we didn't see it!Actually, the starting point should be the same as trail #10 west bound just after Mile Marker 147. On trail #10 take the first left just after passing the gate and pass under the interstate and follow the trail directions.This book would serve its reader better with actual topo and satellite views of trails available on Terrain Navigator Pro from My Topo. The line drawings leave much to be desired.Serious off-road explorers should only use this book as a rough guide and have printed satellite views of the trails available for the trips. Terrain Navigator provides these and the topographic maps. Delorme's competitive offering to Terrain Navigator Pro could be called Terrain Navigator Light as it does not show all the trails.It is illegal and dangerous to cross the medium of the interstate and it is 19 miles between exits. If you miss the trail the first time you'll be adding 38 miles to your trip.
