In a word--delightful! I enjoyed every page of twists and turns in this fascinating twenties-era mystery, and I'll be purchasing Book 2 as soon as it is out. Posie Parker is quite the sleuth. I love the way her mind works and her brash way of plunging head-first into situations which might--and sometimes do--turn out badly. The "legend" of the Maharajah diamond is the kind that always sparks interest and leads to certain danger and disaster. If you enjoy a fast-paced cozy 'thriller' which doesn't stop to dissemble with graphic scenes and doesn't distract with eye-damaging language, you'll love Posie Parker in Murder Offstage.
This is my first time reading a Posie Parker mystery, although I see that there are four entries in the series. Since this one was fun and moderately priced, I'll be reading more. However, the set-up of the main character of the series isn't especially unique. This Posie Parker is like a less angst-ridden Maisie Dobbs of Winspear's series set in about the same time period.Posie is a young woman whose brother and fiance were both killed in the Great War. Posie herself was an ambulance driver during the war and now, after the death of her rector father, is alone in the world and decides to set up a private investigation agency on her own. Unlike in the Maisie Dobbs stories, here we don't spend much time at all worrying or brooding over traumatic events of the war. The characters here are fairly interesting and likeable but not drawn very deeply. But that's OK b/c it makes for a breezy, fast, escape read. Fine to take you away for an hour or two of fluff in your life. In this first episode of Posie's adventures, she isn't being very successful at all with her agency and is thinking to give it up until the day a man walks in and offers his son Len as a partner for her, since he, the father, is retiring from their investigative business. Len, the son, is a successful "shadower" but needs a better office in a better location. Posie needs business, so they collaborate.Well, this story brings Posie into the investigation of murders, a stolen diamond ring with a curse on it, mysterious people involved in a London theater, an underground nightclub that few know the location of but has hundreds of clients at night (Go figure that one out, if you can), international crime, and even cat abduction. There's also a very low-key, budding romance between Len and Posie. As I said before, this is enjoyable as escape fiction. Don't analyze the mystery and facts within too closely and don't read this as being 100% historically accurate to the time period and you'll have a lot of fun. I'm off to read the second story.
I love mysteries set in England in the 20's and 30's. I'd run out of novels in the other series that I'd been reading, and I thought I'd give this a try based on its reviews. I forced myself to read halfway through before I finally gave myself a pass. The characters were ridiculous and the story and dialogue seemed like they had been lifted from a 1940's New York private eye novel. Maybe someone who isn't familiar with 1920's England could stomach this novel. I couldn't however. Sadly, in my zeal for finding a new series with high ratings, I purchased the first four novels. I'm not sure if these were paid reviews, or friends and family of the author-- regardless, suffice it to say they were VERY generous with their stars. Lesson learned!
I have now read three of the Posie Parker series. I like the main character and the stories are quite well-crafted, but I am afraid that I shall not be reading any more. Although the author has made some effort to ensure an accurate picture of life in 1921, there are just TOO many anachronisms which are extremely irritating. There was no BBC radio until 1922. Posie would not have worn 'nylons' for at least another 25 years. Tanzania was Tanganyika in 1921. Etc Etc. While it is OK to use 21st century expressions in dialogue some creak badly because they reflect allusions, metaphors or catchphrases from the post-World War 2 era A pity; a little more effort in research would have overcome these problems.
I believe somebody stated this was similar to an Agatha Christie novel, however, I would dispute this fact as it was pretty boring in parts and our Aggie knew how to move a story along. The sections which were supposedly dramatic seemed so unbelievable and of course we had to have the police portrayed as goons. Sorry, I found the whole book pretty trifling, maybe young teens would enjoy.
I love English literature, whether it's Shakespeare or a clever, plot twisting story like Murder Offstage. This so reminds me of the greats; Agatha Christie, Margaret Allingham, etc. The story is set in 1920s London. The protagonist is intelligent, brave, determined, a bit foolhardy at times, but always caring and generous to her friends. I liked Posie Parker within the first page and that opinion never changed. Whenever you can relate to the main character in a story, the author has done his or her job. Well done L.B. Hathaway. I look forward to more stories about Posie.
