I’m going to make myself try to plow through this but it is definitely not written for a beginner. Way too much knowledge is presumed by the author. And, the type size is too small for anyone who doesn’t have perfect vision, as are the screen shots from her computer. In the next version, please use a larger font size (at least 12 point!), make your illustrations larger and more readable, and do a first chapter that is truly for beginners. In particular, I’m wanting to see a diagram of the workspace with lines drawn from each and every icon with a name for it, a description of what it does and when one might want to use it. Please note that these icons need to be a good size! I’m not even a regular glasses wearer and they are too darn tiny for even me to see! Blow them up, please and truly identify them. Plus, start each chapter and subject area by telling us what the thing is you are talking about. Again, the author presumes too much. If I knew as much as she presumes, I probably would not have needed to purchase the book. But, I googled some of the basics and printed them out to ADD INSIDE MY BOOK THAT I JUST PURCHASED and had thought would have been in Chapter 1.
this is a digestible tutorial, but I am not convinced it is superior to using the adobe tutorials and you tube videos and just hacking around by yourself. for example, I was setting styles by experiment, and once I got what I thought I liked, I tried to turn it into a master page, and for some reason that was blind to me, I couldn't impose on a new page and get all of it imposed, if you will. you can't look through a book like this and find anything like that. everything is canned and dumbed down to guarantee it works and is not too complicated to explain. and then to boot, they don't actually build anything from scratch, and so, you don't either except as an exercise at the beginning of the book. so, what you learn is everything everyone else learns and it is KISS -- simple enough not to require a level of detail that represents work in the real world. so I was hoping to find a companion text that would go beyond what everyone can teach and yet leave us folks clueless as to actually put the software to work in a non=toy environment with stresses and uncertainties that go beyond a hobby ...this whole industry in my impoverished pocketbook overcharges for a very shallow level of detail and understanding. it is only of value in jumpstarting, not in deepening your expertise.
I am quite familiar with software - including the adobe family. I am not a super expert but I can find my way around.This book it was clearly written by a bunch of technocrats that assume you are familiar with terms after mentioning them once. Most of the illustrations are between 'hard to understand' and 'useless'. Quite a few if them are printed so small they are literally not readable. I have already given up trying to navigate my way through all the lessons because I simply cannot work it out.Generally the dryness of the overall instruction will make your head spin.This book may teach you some basics of InDesign. But do not expect this to be a fun or joyful learning experience.Generally I find this book very frustrating.

Exactly what I needed when I needed it. I use Adobe Photoshop and InDesign every day in my ad work, but had not used InDesign to format a book before. This "classroom" answered all my questions.
This book is easy to follow. It is definitely a classroom in a book. I had no problems understanding it as to how to follow along. This book will help anyone who wants to learn InDesign. Make sure you have Adobe Creative Cloud too. They go hand in hand together. Happy learning!
