Here, the artist adapts recipes from his web show without sacrificing any of the slang, attitude or casual vulgarity fans have come to expect. Referring to himself in both first and third person (sometimes within the space of a single paragraph), the self-proclaimed "King of the Kitchen Pimps" teaches readers how to become a "ghetto gourmet" with basics like scallops "rap'd" in bacon, shrimp cocktail (Cold Shrimpin'), spaghetti (Bro-Ghetti), and lettuce wraps (Chicken Lettuce Blunts). Armed with garlic, onions, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which appear in almost every recipe, Coolio provides step-by-step instructions only slightly more (less?) difficult to navigate for the slangy substitutions (dime bags rather than teaspoons), cheeky asides (step seven in Steak Fatricia: "Pass out the sombreros and machetes"), and unnecessary expletives (Crazy Pollo Salad "easily serves 4 crazy motherf****ers"). The irreverent energy can get tiring, especially when Coolio's indulging a slight misogynistic streak (chapter four is titled "Salad-Eatin' Bitches"), but the basics are well-represented with a minimum of fuss or pre-planning. All the recipes are fairly simple once you understand the lingo i.e. "dime bag, nickle bag", etc... I think these are great for those who don't like a lot of fuss and still have something pretty good to eat. Though "Coolio" said he's only using ingredients that most people already have in their kitchen, and he gave a list of items for your "pimptry" I still had to go and buy a few extra items called for in the recipes but that was no big deal.Some of his terminology might be a little offensive to women, but he is who he is and says it the way he wants to say it. There's a ton of sexual metaphors but as long as the recipes are good I really couldn't care less and I'm a woman. I showed this book to my redneck friends and they loved it. I was surprised by that because I expected them to reject it instantly but was nicely surprised that one of them (the biggest, reddest of all rednecks) asked it he could have it. I was glad I could use the excuse that since it was a Vine item that I couldn't give it away cause I didn't want too. I like it too much.The pictures are great, Coolio is especially lovely looking and his recipes, at least the ones I've tried turned out well. Kung Fu Chicken was good, Night-Night Chicken was especially good (both from "Pimpin' the Poultry" chapter) and the fried catfish was good, however I didn't really need a recipe to fry the catfish like he tells you too. It's pretty basic stuff - just right for a guy since it's not overly-involved and he can enjoy the trash talk while he's cooking.He even has a section for vegetarians (Chapter 10) but I haven't tried any of those recipes yet but they look like they'd be good.
I saw this, found a cheap used copy, and had to buy it for the humor factor. Is it a good cookbook? Meh... the early part of the book with the appetizers is probably the best part, followed by the seafood section, then poultry, then the rest. There aren't any weird or difficult to find ingredients or impossible to follow instructions. His measurement system is based more on how you would buy from a dealer rather than usual imperial measurements. He does give a reference guide in the front of the book to help translate what the measurements actually are though much of it is based on your individual taste. A lot of the recipes are different versions of things that we've all made at one point - spaghetti and meatballs, roast chicken, burgers. No fancy pants recipes here. It's almost like a basic cookbook for single people who need a recipe to follow for the basics but don't want the good old standby Battery Crocker cookbook.Absolutely NOT a book for younger kids to read or for anyone even slightly offended by swearing, drug references, sex references, jail references, etc. I got this purely for the kitsch factor and wasn't disappointed. There are a decent number recipes that I plan to make, and the couple that I have made so far turned out to be quite good. The bean soup recipe is wonderful on a cold, dreary day with a fresh loaf of bread.
Purchased this book after Coolio appeared on Celebrity Cook-Off.The book is more novelty and entertainment than it is a great cookbook. With ingredient list items such as:1 dime bag salt2 eggs, beaten like a red-headed stepchildcheap ass white breadYou'll be struggling to take the recipes seriously, but I guarantee that Coolio's "Drunk Ass Chicken" will be the hit of you're next dinner party.
This is the 5th copy that I have purchased. The first one I bought for a gift, and I had to keep it for myself. This book is hilarious, and the recipes are very real and delicious. Since, I have purchased four more times for gifts, and I am sure this will not be my last.
I bought this for a gift-exchange for Christmas along with the "Baking With My Homies" cookie cutters and "dime bags" of spices. They were a huge hit. Its actually a really decent cookbook too, I ended up buying a second one for my own kitchen. It is truly entertaining to read, with easy to follow recipes. Worth the price!
I bought this as a christmas gift for a roommate. She was pretty stoked when she opened it and proceeded to read a few of the recipes aloud. I have never been so entertained by a cookbook. It's not just funny though - there's a lot of useful information and quite a few good recipes. Who knew Coolio was a cook?
So my family needed some new recipes and I don't really enjoying cooking very much so if I can get some laughs in while cooking, that's a good deal for me. While it's not exactly family friendly to read the recipes are delicious and loved by all the family. There are some innuendos in here that might not be enjoyed by everybody so keep that in mind.
This book is hysterical, and also a really good cookbook. Got this as a gift for my boyfriend, I didn't think that it would actually have as many recipes that we wanted to make it in. It's hysterical to read, but also pretty simple to follow. Unlike most cook books where you aren't ever going to have the 50 obscure items you need to make a chicken salad, this has amazing quick and easy comfort food!
If you havent read this book, then youre really missing out. Like actually the funniest book I've ever read, perfect for a gift.
